Lockport is a city in
Will County,
Illinois,
United States that incorporated in 1853. Lockport is located in northeastern Illinois, 30 miles southwest of
Chicago, and north of
Joliet, at locks connecting
Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal with the
Des Plaines River via the
Lockport Powerhouse. It also has locks of the old
Illinois and Michigan Canal.

square miles (18.4
km²), of which, 7.1 square miles (18.3 km²) of it's land and 0.14% is water.
Demographics
According to real estate figures, Lockport is one of the fastest growing communities in Illinois in 2007. Although the population was 15,191 at the 2000 census (and then estimated it would be 22,161 in 2005), a special
census of
2003 counted 52,191 people, 13,599 households, and 12,137 families residing in the city. The
population density was 2,144.3 people per square mile (828.4/km²). There were 5,835 housing units at an average density of 823.7/sq mi (318.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.82%

Asian, 0.01%
Pacific Islander, 0.94% from
other races, and 1.15% from two or more races.
Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 4.34% of the population.
There were 8,599 households out of which 38.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% were
married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% were non-families. 20.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 36.1% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $86,179, and the median income for a family was $75,257. Males had a median income of $65,759 versus $42,551 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $32,939. About 3.2% of families and 3.5% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 1.2% of those age 65 or over.
Transportation
Lockport has a
station on
Metra's
Heritage Corridor, which provides daily rail service between
Joliet, Illinois and
Chicago, Illinois (at
Union Station).
